From its roots in bike repairs to becoming a one-of-a-kind outdoor shop in Arkansas, the store has grown to offer a wide range of outdoor gear and apparel that helps people live fulfilling and active lives. Today, with a new location in Grand Junction, Colorado, Gearhead Outfitters is eager to bring its wealth of experience and commitment to the Western Slope.

A Legacy of Passion and Growth

Originally started in a friend’s living room in Jonesboro Arkansas, Gearhead Outfitters initially focused on bike repairs. Over the years, it has expanded into a thriving business that provides outdoor gear, apparel, and equipment for every type of adventurer. The founder’s vision was to create a store that not only served the local community but also cultivated a sense of belonging and adventure. To address the needs of a smaller community without significant access to major outdoor brands, Zach Arwood, the General Manager of the Grand Junction location, was chosen to bring Gearhead Outfitters to Colorado, drawing on his years of experience with the store and its ownership. With eight employees at the Grand Junction location, Gearhead remains privately owned by the founders, with the same core values intact. The goal is to create an outdoor experience that helps customers improve their lifestyles, form lasting relationships, and celebrate the outdoor lifestyle, whether it’s through cycling, hiking, or other activities.

The store’s team is passionate about supporting local businesses, including restaurants and other shops, ensuring that the community remains vibrant and strong.

“Being part of this community means making a meaningful impact on the lives of the people we see everyday,” says Zach. “We want to be a place where people feel welcomed and supported, not just for outdoor gear but as part of the bigger community.”

Allowing for personable interactions and genuine connections with their guests. “We want customers to feel like they can wander the store, ask questions, and have genuine conversations.” Zach explains.

They pride themselves on being transparent and honest about their products, ensuring that customers feel confident in their purchases. The team listens attentively to each customer’s needs, offering personalized suggestions and advice. A rewards program is also in place, so customers feel recognized and appreciated, making it easy for them to return for future outdoor needs.

While many might not know, Gearhead Outfitters has expanded beyond Arkansas to serve customers in six different states, including Missouri, Tennessee, Kansas, Oklahoma, Colorado and Chicago. Their stores maintain the same selection of products, ensuring that every location can offer consistent, high-quality gear for outdoor enthusiasts.

To strengthen the bond between employees and the community, the Gearhead team also participates in “Dawn Patrol,” a team-building activity that usually takes place monthly. Whether it’s bouldering, hiking, or biking, these excursions help foster a sense of camaraderie and connection among the team members, making them better stewards of the brand and community.

Looking Ahead: Growing with the Community

Looking to the future, Gearhead Outfitters has exciting plans for the Grand Junction location. The store’s personal goal is to become a great running shop and a one-stop shop for all things outdoor. Through its “Project 90” initiative, Gearhead encourages people to exercise through a 90 day online running program designed to teach you the proper way to run to reduce injury.

The team is also focused on continuing to serve the community by offering local non-profits opportunities to raise funds and awareness. Through events like Try-On events, where 1% of all try-ons are donated to charity, Gearhead works to make a tangible difference in the community.
