The Nature Connection is dedicated to eliminating barriers to the outdoors for youth and families in our community; Delta County and Olathe.

Position Description:

The Generation Wild Camp Lead is a contributing member of the Nature Connection’s summer programs in June and July offered at two locations in Delta and Hotchkiss. The goal of these camps is to help campers create a connection to nature, make positive relationships, and build confidence in outdoor skills. Leads will work closely with the Director of Programs to manage 8 weeks of camp for children ages 7-11 years old. This includes developing and leading outdoor activities, facilitating off-site trips, and supervising high school camp interns. Outdoor program components include, but not limited to mountain biking, stand-up paddleboarding, swimming, hiking, archery, overnight campout, nature focused activities, crafts, team building games. 

Responsibilities:

  • Ensure high quality, safe and consistent outdoor programs for a diverse population of students
  • Oversee the health and wellness of camp participants including proper sanitation and first aid
  • Demonstrate proper and safe use of outdoor equipment and gear
  • Provide superior client service to all campers, parents/families, staff, volunteers, partners, and vendors
  • Supervise high school aged camp counselors by setting a good example, delegating tasks, providing direct feedback, and collecting timesheets
  • Work with Camp Counselors to plan various activities and guide campers through the week’s schedule
  • Assist with a range of administrative duties including filling out incident reports, submitting timesheets, and collecting statistics
  • Assist with conflict resolution
  • Encourage and inspire campers

About You: Our ideal candidate will possess the following qualifications, skills, and experience: 

  • Experience mentoring or supervising children
  • Experience in formal/informal outdoor education, childcare, outdoor recreation industry or related field
  • Good judgment and strong moral and ethical code
  • Ability to act and maintain composure in stressful situations
  • Self starter and problem solver with excellent organizational skills
  • Outdoor enthusiast: Experience with outdoor sports like mountain biking, paddling, swimming and hiking. 
  • Valid Driver’s License
  • Evidence of sound leadership skills including excellent verbal communications skills; effective facilitation, conflict resolution, and team building. Must be able to work with people of all ages and physical abilities
  • Physical demands: standing, walking and/or physically active outdoors for 5+ hours outside, must be able to pass a swim test, routinely lift 15 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds
  • Minimum age: 18 years

Compensation:  Hourly: $18-$22/hour depending on experience. Free outdoor gear during summer (SUPs, mountain bikes, camping equipment). Wilderness first aid training provided.

Locations: We are looking for Leads for the following locations:

  • Hotchkiss: 8 week camp June 1-July 31; base camp at the Nature Connection
  • Delta: 8 week camp June 1-July 31; base camp at Delta Middle School

Commitments: 

  • 32 hours/week
  • Typical schedule will be Monday – Thursday, 8:30am-3:30pm
  • Mandatory Lead Orientation: May 13 & 14, 4:30-6:30pm
  • Mandatory Summer Staff Orientation: May 26-29
  • Wilderness First Aid Training (if you don’t already have): May 30
  • First Day on the job: June 1; Last Day on the job: July 31
  • Week of June 29-July 4 off
